You’re asking for universities—not individual academics, but universities—to publicly acknowledge the occupation. Is this fair? Is this a thing universities, as entities, do or something we expect them to do? Have European universities (again, at the university level) condemned things that Europe has done? We are insisting on this distinction because there are Israeli academics working at Israeli universities who are strongly critical of Israel’s policies (for example, Neve Gordon—whose views were disavowed by Ben-Gurion University, but who nonetheless continues to work there).
This whole thing read as very weird to us, and what I immediately figured was that this was originally a call for a full academic boycott that got softened in a later draft. I don’t really have a good story for it otherwise.
