The term 'natural disasters' is increasingly banned in (social science!) academic circles, because it conveys the false idea that disasters such as floods or eartquake are 'natural' and cannot be prevented. In fact, disasters are far from 'natural', they come about through the coming together of a hazard and vulnerability. The latter is always socially mediated and depends on political choices.
