In addition, China's growing influence in African states is increasingly showing neo-colonial power relations. Debt-based infrastructure projects, asymmetric trade relations and strategic control over raw materials, ports, energy networks and digital infrastructure create long-term economic and political dependencies. Many of these projects primarily serve China's geopolitical and economic interests, while local value creation, democratic participation and sustainable development often take a back seat. This form of economic expansion reproduces global inequalities and limits the sovereignty of many states with colonial histories by requiring that political decisions are increasingly made under the pressure of financial and strategic dependencies.
